Red Zone Report – 6/30/2009
Giants fans, there is some important news today! The Giants have officially signed running-back Andre Brown. He was our fourth-round pick in the draft. To introduce you all to him, I have attached a video along to the report so you can check out what he can bring to our team. Can he be the wind to the Earth (Jacobs) and fire (Bradshaw)?

The New York Giants have announced today that they have signed tight end Travis Beckum, 3rd round pick from the 2009 draft, to a contract deal. Beckum was the 2nd of their 3rd round draft pick choices this year, taken 100th overall. Beckum is 6-3, 239 pounds and played his college career at the University of Wisconsin. Beckum now becomes the fifth draft pick out of nine signed by the Giants this offseason. Joining him in contracts are draft picks Ramses Barden, Rhett Bomar, Stoney Woodson, and DeAndre Wright. To accommodate for the signing of Beckum, the Giants have released defensive end Alex Field, who was signed as a free agent from Virginia.
At his first season at Wisconsin, Beckum went back and forth between line backer and tight end. The following three years he spent completely at tight end, catching 159 passes for 2,149 yards and 11 touchdowns in 30 career games. Last year, Beckum only played in six games due to a fractured left fibula in a game against Illinois. Beckum is definitely a good pick up and another weapon and target for Eli Manning. Now the question is: who else will the Giants sign from their draft picks? My main concern right now is 1st round draft pick Hakeem Nicks, but I’m sure soon enough the two sides will come to an agreement.

Giants fans, for tonight’s Red Zone Report, it’s all about the stadiums, old and new. Have you checked out GIANTS.com recently? If not, you should check it out because they are putting up the old stadium seats up for sale. I believe it was two seats for $499. For those of you hardcore Giants fans out there, here is your opportunity to pick up history. I don’t see the point in it though. Anyway, on to the new stadium. What do you all think about the new stadium prices? Tonight’s question is: Have you purchased a new stadium seat license?

Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards was once almost a sure thing as the newest New York Giant. However when draft day came, the Browns asked the Giants for too much, a 1st and 3rd round draft pick. The Giants decided it was not worth it, and rightfully so, signing Hakeem Nicks in the 1st round, and Ramses Barden in the 3rd round. These two wide receivers are expected to make some noise in the NFL. In an interview recently, Braylon Edwards has officially said that he is remaining committed to the Browns franchise. Edwards now sees his career at a turning point, one where two years ago he was at the top of his game.
In the 2007 season, Edwards scored 16 touchdowns and set a franchise record with 1,289 receiving yards. However last year, Edwards had a drastic decline in production. He only scored a mere 3 touchdowns with 873 receiving yards. This year, Edwards is looking to make a big comeback for the sake of his career, but it will not be easy by any means. He seems to be happy about the new head coach and former Jets head coach, Eric Mangini. Tight end Kellen Winsolow has now left the team and Donte Stallworth’s future with the team is still uncertain. The Giants may have passed up on Edwards, but I think they made the right decision.
We have seen in the past with Burress and Barber that some of these players with big ego’s can bring down the rest of the team. Edwards is one of those players, and building up an offense with draft picks, although unproven at the time, may be the most effective method in the long run. Let’s give Nicks, Barden, and Beckum a chance before anyone jumps down the Giants throat for not acquiring a big time wide receiver this year. Just as in 2007, these draft picks just may surprise you in a way that is none other than simply amazing.
